One of the most sensitive planetary combinations in Jyotish is the conjunction of planets with the Sun. When a planet comes within 5 degrees of the Sun, it is said to be combust. In this state, the Sun metaphorically burns the planet, weakening its ability to express its natural qualities.
The planetās energy is overshadowed ā or consumed ā by the overpowering radiance of the Sun. While combustion doesnāt destroy the planetās influence, it does diminish its strength and clarity, particularly for the more delicate or benefic planets.
Venus combust may still bring beauty and charm to the native, but emotional satisfaction and happiness in love or marriage may suffer. The Sunās overpowering light obscures Venusās natural gifts of intimacy and tenderness.
As the old Russian saying goes: āDonāt be born beautiful, be born lucky.ā
Mercury combust can result in challenges with speech, learning, and communication. Some may experience stuttering, muddled articulation, or difficulty expressing thoughts with clarity. The intellect, while still present, becomes fogged under the Sunās heat.
Interestingly, Jupiter, the most benevolent and spiritually exalted of the planets, remains largely unaffected by combustion. His divine nature preserves his essence.
A conjunction of Jupiter with the Sun often signifies a person with profound spiritual merit from past lives, deep respect for wisdom, and an innate leaning toward religion, philosophy, or the guidance of teachers and mentors.
Ironically, the malefic planets ā known for their harsher qualities ā may lose some of their negative impact when combust:
Saturn combust does not necessarily indicate instability or betrayal. On the contrary, it can fortify the personality, sharpening oneās focus and building inner discipline and resilience. Saturn is, in fact, stronger than the Sun in this context, so the combustion may instead affect the Sun, especially as the significator of the father (Pitri-karaka). This can point to early loss or distance from the father figure. Mars combust can intensify impulsiveness, rash behaviour, and fits of anger. Though Mars is considered āstrongerā than the Sun in malefic force, his combustion can result in power struggles with authority, conflict with father figures, or difficulty channelling assertive energy constructively.
Combustion isnāt simply a weakening ā it is a transformation. Planets lose part of their surface-level qualities, often forcing the native to seek deeper expression of those traits. Understanding which planet is combust, its house rulership, and the strength of the Sun is crucial for interpreting its karmic message.
In the celestial fire of the Sun, some planets are scorched ā others are tempered.
