🪐 Core Concepts in Jyotish: Planetary Conjunction (Yuti-Graha)

In Jyotish (Vedic astrology), a conjunction occurs when two or more planets occupy the same sign. A true or full conjunction is generally defined as planets being within 20 degrees of each other. When planets are further apart than that — though still in the same sign — their mutual influence is considered significantly weakened.

Conjunctions create a fusion of planetary energies, and their outcome depends on the nature of the planets involved.

✨ Benefic vs. Malefic Influence

When a planet is joined by a benefic (saumya) planet, its positive qualities are strengthened and elevated. When a planet is joined by a malefic (krura) planet, it is considered afflicted or weakened, and its negative traits may be amplified.

Each conjunction produces a unique blend of characteristics, and to interpret it properly, one must determine which planet dominates the conjunction — this is typically the strongest one (see Chapter 4 for strength assessment methods).

🔥 An Example: Sun, Mars, and Venus in Capricorn

Let’s consider a birth chart in which the Sun, Mars, and Venus are all placed in Capricorn:

Mars is exalted in Capricorn, giving it dominance in the conjunction. Therefore, Mars sets the tone: the person may be passionate, bold, and energetic — but also intense, jealous, sharp-tongued, and occasionally harsh or vengeful.

If the same trio were located in Taurus, Venus, as the lord of Taurus, would become more influential:

The person would still be passionate and perhaps possessive, but with a more graceful, emotionally restrained, and tactful expression in relationships.

Planetary War (Graha Yuddha)

Another important consideration is planetary war — when two planets are closely conjoined, the one with the lower zodiacal longitude (i.e., lower degree within the sign) is said to “win” and become more dominant.

For example:

If the Sun has a smaller degree than Mars, the Sun wins the conjunction. But the Sun, being afflicted by Mars (a natural malefic), may express its negative traits, such as egoism or domineering behaviour. However, if the Sun is conjoined only with Venus or another benefic, its more generous and noble qualities may surface — though still somewhat diminished if the Sun is placed in an enemy sign (as discussed in Chapter 4).

🧭 Summary

In Jyotish, conjunctions are subtle and powerful indicators of personality and karma. Their interpretation requires attention to:

The individual strength and dignity of each planet The nature of their relationship (benefic vs. malefic) The zodiacal context — sign rulership, exaltation, and planetary war

A well-interpreted conjunction can reveal complex psychological dynamics, spiritual tendencies, and life events with striking clarity.
