CHANDRA YOGAS — Planetary Combinations with the Moon

Sunapha Yoga arises when any planet (except the Sun) is located in the 2nd house from the Moon. It brings intelligence, fame, and the ability to earn money well.

Anapha Yoga is formed when any planet (excluding the Sun) is positioned in the 12th house from the Moon. It grants health, happiness, charm, and a virtuous character.

Durudhara Yoga occurs when planets (excluding the Sun) are situated both in the 2nd and 12th houses from the Moon. It brings wealth and many pleasures in life.

Kemadruma Yoga is formed when there are no planets (apart from the Sun) in the sign of the Moon, as well as in the 2nd and 12th houses from the Moon, and no planets in the kendras (quadrants) from the Ascendant. This yoga brings poverty, deprivation, loneliness, childhood illnesses, melancholy, and depression.

In Einstein’s horoscope, the Moon is “alone”, not surrounded by any planets. This suggests that, like many geniuses, he felt isolated among people and experienced emotional suppression and heaviness. Shakata Yoga is formed when the Moon is located in the 6th, 8th, or 12th houses from Jupiter (Guru), indicating constant changes — highs and lows — in life. Adhi Yoga arises when benefic planets are located in the 6th, 7th, and 8th houses from the Moon. It denotes good health, noble character, popularity, and wealth.

Amala Yoga is formed when benefic planets are situated in the 10th house from either the Moon or the Ascendant. It brings fame, respect, righteousness, and a readiness to help others. In Einstein’s chart, Mercury and Venus are in the 10th house from the Ascendant. He was always willing to help the needy, was humble in his interactions, and followed humanistic ideals.

Einstein once said of himself: “The ideals which have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth.”

Balarishta Yoga is formed when the Moon is positioned in dusthana houses (the 6th, 8th, or 12th). Balarishta translates as “harm to the child”. Traditionally, it was believed to indicate early death, but in modern contexts, it is interpreted as childhood illness or the divorce/separation of parents.

Balarishta-Bhanga Yoga — the “neutralisation” of Balarishta — occurs when birth happens during daylight (after sunrise and before sunset) with a waning Moon (Krishna Paksha), or during the night (after sunset and before sunrise) with a waxing Moon (Shukla Paksha). This grants the person high protection from Chandra (the Moon), expressed as fortunate circumstances. The effects of Balarishta will still manifest, but instead of being destructive, they will build inner strength. In Einstein’s chart, Balarishta-Bhanga Yoga is present: the Moon is waning (Krishna Paksha), and he was born during the day. His childhood could not be called happy: he had a domineering mother, did not speak until the age of three, and by seven could only repeat memorised phrases. He was prone to tantrums, did poorly in school, and did not receive a formal school diploma. Nonetheless, there was always an element of “divine intervention” in his life — a higher protection.
