Chaturthamsha (D4 Chart): The Map of Destiny’s Direction

What is Chaturthamsha?

The word Chaturthamsha means “one-fourth division”. It’s a divisional chart (or varga) in Vedic astrology that reveals the deeper direction of a person’s life path. In other words, it offers insights into your core destiny—what your soul is really here to do.

This chart is considered very important, especially when interpreting long-term success, inner direction, and your overall karmic purpose.

How Is It Calculated?

Each zodiac sign (30°) is split into four equal parts of 7°30’ each, and each of these parts is called an amsha.

Here’s the logic behind which sign each amsha falls into:

1st amsha (0° to 7°30’): Governed by the same sign it falls in.
2nd amsha (7°30’ to 15°): Governed by the 4th sign from the original sign (counting inclusively). 3rd amsha (15° to 22°30’): Governed by the 7th sign from the original sign.
4th amsha (22°30’ to 30°): Governed by the 10th sign from the original sign.

So, for example, if a planet is in Aries (Mesha):

If it’s between 0°–7°30’ → it stays in Aries in the Chaturthamsha.
If it’s between 7°30’–15° → it moves to Cancer (the 4th sign from Aries).
If it’s between 15°–22°30’ → it moves to Libra (7th from Aries).
If it’s between 22°30’–30° → it moves to Capricorn (10th from Aries).

Why It Matters

The Chaturthamsha shows how your life’s direction unfolds, especially in terms of property, fortune, and overall destiny. It helps you understand:

What areas of life you’ll be drawn to. Where your deeper strength lies. How your soul’s story is written beyond the surface.
