Combust Planets: When the Sun Burns Too Bright (Copa-Avastha)

In Vedic astrology, when a planet gets too close to the Sun—less than 5 degrees apart—it’s considered combust. Think of it as the Sun shining so intensely that the nearby planet gets overpowered. That planet struggles to show its best qualities and can even feel “burned out” in that area of life.

The planet becomes incapable of expressing its highest qualities—the Sun “overshadows” or “burns” the planet. Combustion weakens a planet, particularly benefic ones like Venus and Mercury, causing it to lose strength in its karaka (significator) role.

What Happens to Combust Planets?

Venus (planet of love and beauty): When Venus is combust, you might still look great—but relationships can be a challenge. You might attract people easily, but struggle with deeper emotional connection or long-term happiness in love.

A Venus-Sun conjunction may give physical beauty (Venus influencing the Sun) but tends to deny happiness in love or marriage (Sun overpowering Venus). The old Russian saying “It’s better to be lucky than beautiful” sums this up perfectly.

Mercury (planet of communication and learning):

Combust Mercury can make it harder to focus, learn, or speak your truth. You might second-guess yourself or have trouble getting your ideas across clearly.

Jupiter (wisdom, growth, teachers):

Jupiter, however, is such a powerful and benefic planet that even combustion doesn’t weaken it much. A Sun–Jupiter conjunction typically shows piety, philosophical insight, spiritual tendencies, and respect for teachers and spiritual guides—indicating wisdom from past lives.

Combust Malefics: A Bit of a Twist

When malefic planets are combust, their negative qualities may soften:

For example, combust Saturn doesn’t always bring disloyalty or inconsistency. On the contrary, it may strengthen the personality, making one’s principles and convictions more steadfast and resilient. Saturn, being stronger in its malefic nature than the Sun, can reflect back onto the Sun itself—often showing early loss of the father (Sun as the pitri-karaka, significator of father).

A Sun–Mars conjunction may result in impulsiveness, anger, rash decisions, or a quick temper. Since Mars is also considered stronger in its malefic force than the Sun, this conjunction can create conflict with the father or authority figures.

✨ In short: Combustion dims the power of a planet, especially the sweet, benefic ones like Venus or Mercury. But it can also refine and sharpen tough planets like Saturn or Mars, depending on how you use that heat.
