A conjunction occurs when two or more planets occupy the same sign. A true or full conjunction is defined as planets being within 20 degrees of one another. If the gap is wider, their mutual influence weakens.
A conjunction with a benefic planet strengthens and enhances the other planet’s positive traits. A conjunction with a malefic, on the other hand, can weaken or even “afflict” the joined planet.
In conjunctions, the planetary energies blend. To assess a conjunction properly, it’s crucial to determine which planet dominates the configuration. This will be the strongest planet in the grouping.
Example:
If the Sun is conjunct Mars and Venus in Capricorn, and Mars is exalted in Capricorn, Mars will dominate the conjunction. The resulting personality might be passionate, intense, strong-willed, jealous, at times harsh, vengeful, or sharp in nature.
If the same conjunction occurs in Taurus, Venus—being the lord of Taurus—will likely set the tone. While the person might still display passion and jealousy, they would appear more composed, romantic, or emotionally restrained in relationships.
Planetary War:
If the Sun has a lower zodiacal degree (meaning it rises earlier within the sign), it wins what’s called a “planetary war” (Graha Yuddha), overpowering Mars. In that case, solar qualities like ego or authority would dominate. If afflicted by Mars, the Sun may express its negative traits, such as pride or selfishness.
However, if the Sun is joined only with Venus or another benefic, these harsher qualities may be softened. Still, if the Sun is in an inimical sign, it might not express itself in the best way, even when paired with benefics.
