Did you know that the roots of Greek (Western) astrology actually lie in Jyotish, the ancient Vedic system?
You can even see this connection in the names of the zodiac signs themselves:
Mesha in Sanskrit means Aries (the Ram) Vrishabha means Taurus (the Bull) Mithuna means Gemini (the Twins), and so on.
The only exception is Capricorn:
In Jyotish, this sign is called Makara, a mystical creature — part crocodile, part fish, often shown with wings — a very different symbol from the Western goat.
Both Jyotish and Western astrology work with twelve houses in a horoscope, counted from the sign rising at the moment of birth — called the Ascendant in the West and Lagna in Jyotish.
There are many shared meanings too, especially when it comes to how planets behave in zodiac signs and houses.
But here’s where things really differ:
Jyotish uses the “fixed zodiac” — it’s based on the actual positions of the stars in the sky. Western astrology uses the “moving zodiac”, tied to the Earth’s tropical seasons.
Because of the Earth’s tilt and the gradual shift of the equinox points (a phenomenon called precession), the stars’ positions in the sky slowly “drift” relative to our seasonal calendar.
This means that what we call “Taurus season” in Western astrology doesn’t always line up with where the constellation Taurus actually is.
For example:
✨ When the Sun is said to be in Taurus, it’s often physically sitting in Gemini from an astronomical viewpoint!
A long time ago, these two zodiacs lined up perfectly — but now they’ve drifted apart by almost 24 degrees (this gap is called Ayanamsha).
And this split is part of what makes our time so unique:
According to the Vedas, we live in the Kali Yuga — an age of conflict and disharmony — and astrologically, this means we’re under the influence of two signs at once, sometimes pulling us in opposite directions.
🌿 So even though Jyotish and Western astrology share ancient roots, they see the stars from slightly different angles — like two sisters watching the same sky but telling different stories.
