The word Navamsha (Sanskrit: नवांश) literally means “ninth division”. It represents one-ninth of a zodiac sign (Rashi), and it is a key divisional chart (Varga) in Vedic astrology. Just like every Rashi spans 30°, each Navamsha covers 3°20′ of a sign.
Navamsha is not a separate chart pulled from thin air — it is derived directly from the degrees of planets in your birth chart. It provides insight into a planet’s inner strength, spiritual trajectory, and karmic unfolding, especially during its dasha (planetary period). While the birth chart (Rashi) shows your outer life, the Navamsha reveals your inner evolution.
To construct a Navamsha chart, follow these key steps:
1. Start with the Birth Chart (Janma Rashi)
You need the exact degree of the Ascendant (Lagna) and each planet in the 12 signs.
2. Divide Each Zodiac Sign into 9 Parts (Amshas)
Each 30° sign is split into nine segments of 3°20′ each. These are the Navamshas. Each amsha maps onto a different sign in the Navamsha chart — and the mapping depends on whether the sign is movable, fixed, or dual. (A visual table can help — let me know if you’d like a custom graphic.)
3. Locate the Ascendant in the Navamsha Chart
Using a Navamsha table, find the Navamsha sign that corresponds to the exact degree of the Lagna. This becomes the Navamsha Lagna — the foundation of your divisional chart.
4. Repeat the Process for Every Planet
Go through the same table for each planet. Find its degree placement in the Rashi chart, and match it to the corresponding Navamsha sign.
A planet strong in Rashi but weak in Navamsha may fail to deliver good results in its dasha. Conversely, a planet weak in Rashi but exalted or well-placed in Navamsha might shine when its time comes. Planets placed in the same sign in both charts are called Vargottama — and this makes them extremely powerful.
