Planetary Aspects (Drishti Graha)

When Planets “Look” at Each Other

In Vedic astrology, planets don’t just sit still—they influence one another and the houses of the horoscope through aspects, or drishtis (literally “glances” or “sight”). A planet casts its influence upon another planet or house when it forms a certain angular relationship with it—similar to how someone might cast a meaningful look across a room.

Whenever a planet aspects a house or another planet, it transmits some of its qualities and energy, creating blends of temperament, intention, or karma.

🔁 Basic Aspect Rule

All planets naturally aspect the 7th sign from their own position.

So, for example, if the Sun is in Pisces and Jupiter is in Virgo, the two are said to be in mutual aspect, since Pisces and Virgo are opposite (7th from each other).

🔮 Special Aspects: Jupiter, Mars & Saturn

These three planets have unique “extra” glances:

Jupiter (Guru)

➤ Aspects the 5th, 7th, and 9th houses/signs from where it sits.

➤ Jupiter’s aspects bring wisdom, guidance, expansion, and benevolence.

Mars (Mangala)

➤ Aspects the 4th, 7th, and 8th houses/signs

➤ Mars brings energy, aggression, protection, or conflict depending on context.

Saturn (Shani)

➤ Aspects the 3rd, 7th, and 10th houses/signs.

➤ Saturn’s glances are heavy, bringing pressure, patience, discipline—or burden.

🌓 What About Rahu and Ketu?

There’s no consensus among Vedic astrologers about whether Rahu and Ketu cast aspects at all.

Some say these shadow planets only influence by conjunction (being in the same sign).

Others argue they do aspect—and that they cast their intense influence on the 5th, 7th, and 9th houses from their own position. Based on experience, many astrologers agree they do affect both planets and houses they “glance” at.

🔄 Aspects vs. Conjunctions

When planets aspect each other, their energies blend—but not as strongly as when they’re conjunct (in the same sign).

For instance, if the Sun is aspected by Jupiter, it may show a spiritual or righteous character. But if the Sun and Jupiter are conjunct, the effect is more powerful—producing a bold, wise, honour-driven personality with strong ethical values and leadership potential.
