Astronomically, Rahu and Ketu are the points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the Sun’s apparent path (the ecliptic). These points are always directly opposite each other and move in retrograde motion. Their positions can be calculated very precisely, as they hold special predictive significance in a birth chart.
Typically, Rahu amplifies the characteristics of the house it occupies, introducing tendencies toward conflict, rivalry, and struggle.
Strong placements of Rahu and Ketu are traditionally interpreted as indicating a person born into a lower social class or one with immoral thoughts and questionable actions.
A strong Rahu can, however, bring a person power and help them achieve a high status in society. Rahu is associated with ambition and material gain, but it also stirs inner restlessness and dissatisfaction.
Rahu behaves like the ruler of the sign where it is placed, so its strength depends not only on its own sign placement but also on the condition of that sign’s ruling planet.
Many classical Jyotish texts note that Rahu behaves much like Saturn: slow, heavy, and karmically charged.
The primary indication of Rahu is selfish desire for enjoyment — the sort of desires that sages warn us to beware of. As the Bhagavad Gita notes:
“That which seems like nectar at first turns to poison later, while that which seems bitter at first becomes nectar in the end.”
Rahu pushes us to indulge our materialistic nature, plunging us into a race for illusory happiness and superficial success.
Rahu is linked to doubt’s, disappointment, and insecurity. It confuses the mind, entices us with temptations, and often leads us astray.
As a shadow planet with a demonic nature (like Ketu), Rahu symbolises what is unlawful, disapproved, or self-destructive — addictions, intoxicants, gambling, deceit.
Its only real advantage from a material perspective is that it can grant influence over others and the ability to lead crowds. Yet, from a spiritual point of view, this is one of the greatest tests: the allure of power.
Rahu also represents toxins, and traits like greed, envy, and covetousness.
