Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers (1854–1918) was one of the founding members of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and the primary architect of its Tarot system. Building on earlier French occult theories, Mathers wove Tarot into a vast network of correspondences — linking each Major Arcana card to a Hebrew letter, a path on the Tree of Life, an astrological sign, or a planetary force. He established the astrological decan system for the Minor Arcana, assigning specific time periods and elemental qualities to each card.
Mathers’s work transformed Tarot into a ceremonial and initiatory tool, not merely a divination method. Within the Golden Dawn, Tarot cards were used for meditation, pathworking, astral travel, and magical invocation. His detailed manuscript, Book T, became the cornerstone of the Order’s Tarot teachings and influenced nearly every modern esoteric deck.
While Mathers’s personal life was marked by drama and power struggles within the Order, his Tarot framework remains unmatched in its depth and magical precision. His system still forms the backbone of the Golden Dawn-style decks I use today — decks that speak in the language he so carefully built.
