The logic behind the Saptamsha changes depending on the nature of the zodiac sign in which the planet or Lagna falls:

If the planet is in an odd (masculine) sign, then: The first division (amsha) is assigned to the same sign the planet occupies. Subsequent amshas are distributed forward through the zodiac in natural order. If the planet is in an even (feminine) sign, then: The first division belongs to the opposite sign. The following amshas then proceed forward in the regular zodiacal sequence.
