Saturn in Astrology

In Jyotish (Vedic astrology), Saturn is considered a feminine, earthy planet.

Saturn is known as the Ayush-karaka—the significator of longevity. Its placement in a birth chart indicates the potential length of a person’s life.

In Jyotish, Saturn is a marker of negative karma. It’s viewed as the most challenging but also one of the most important planets. Saturn destroys false ideals, compelling us to confront life’s deeper questions—such as the search for meaning and purpose. It draws the mind towards inner focus, encourages concentration on the soul’s journey, and stimulates the desire for spiritual growth. For this reason, Saturn is also called a Moksha-karaka—a significator of liberation from the cycle of rebirth.

Saturn represents death, misfortune, loss, deprivation, pride, ruthlessness, and hardship.

In a chart, Saturn signifies elderly people, servants, individuals from humble backgrounds, ascetics, and renunciants. It also rules over land, property, mining, raw materials, subterranean resources, lead, and all real estate transactions.

A strong Saturn bestows rare and admirable qualities: loyalty, devotion, constancy. “Saturnians” tend to have slender frames, reserved and serious demeanour, and a heavy, penetrating gaze. They are prudent, cautious, modest, and excellent organisers and executors. A strong Saturn endows honesty, truthfulness, reliability, and chastity.

Saturnians are often deeply sensitive but hide their feelings behind a mask of restraint. They are frequently unfairly criticised and misunderstood, which leads them to avoid social circles. Typically, their careers and personal development progress very slowly.

A weak or afflicted Saturn indicates irritability, constant dissatisfaction, a tendency to complain, and outbursts of blind anger.

In the human body, Saturn governs the bones, teeth, spleen, spine, the right ear, and the sense of hearing.

Saturn’s associated metal is iron and steel; its gemstone is blue sapphire; its day is Saturday; and its colours are dark blue or black.
