STRENGTH OF A PLANET IN A SIGN (STHANA BALA)

Understanding the strength of a planet is key to interpreting a birth chart. It’s not only the foundation of astrological analysis but also essential for making predictions.

As discussed earlier, each planet has its own sign (swakshetra), a sign of exaltation (uccha) where its power peaks, and a sign of debilitation (neecha) where it is weakest.

Additionally, two other important concepts are used in assessing planetary strength:

Moolatrikonaa sign where the planet is especially comfortable and powerful, though not at full exaltation. Swakshetra the planet’s own sign, where it feels “at home.”

The strength of a planet in its own sign (swakshetra) is considered equal to being in its own domain, offering moderate power. Moolatrikona is stronger than swakshetra but not as powerful as exaltation. Exaltation represents the planet at its highest potency, while debilitation marks its lowest.

Below is a table (mentioned in the original) which ranks planetary strength from highest to lowest, based on their position within a sign. Specific degrees are often noted—for example, the 10th degree of Aries is the exaltation degree of the Sun and marks its peak strength.

How to Evaluate Planetary Strength If No Special Positions Are Present

If a planet does not occupy any of the special positions listed in the table (such as exaltation or own sign), its strength can still be evaluated based on:

its involvement in yogas (see planetary combinations), aspects it receives from other planets, and its placement in the houses of the birth chart.

As a reminder:

Aspects from benefic planets (Jupiter, Venus, waxing Moon, and Mercury when not afflicted) strengthen a planet.

Aspects from malefic planets (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, and Ketu) weaken or afflict the planet.

What Is Neechabhanga?

When a planet is in debilitation (neecha), it’s generally considered weak. However, under certain conditions, this weakness can be “canceled” or compensated for — a condition known as Neechabhanga (cancellation of debilitation). This doesn’t mean the planet becomes strong immediately, but it may improve over time and bring better results if “worked through” in life.

Neechabhanga occurs when any of the following apply:

The debilitated planet is in a kendra (angular house: 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th) from the Ascendant or the Moon. The ruler of the sign in which the planet is debilitated is also in a kendra from the Moon or the Ascendant. The planet that is exalted in the same sign where the debilitated planet is placed is in a kendra from the Moon or the Ascendant. The debilitated planet is in exaltation in the Navamsha chart (D9 divisional chart).

Einstein’s Example:

In Albert Einstein’s birth chart, Mercury is debilitated in Pisces but receives three forms of Neechabhanga:

Mercury is placed in a kendra (10th house) from the Ascendant. Jupiter, the ruler of Pisces, is in a kendra from the Moon. Venus, which is exalted in Pisces, is also in a kendra from the Ascendant.

These yogas significantly reduce the harmful effects of Mercury’s debilitation and are part of what elevated Einstein’s intellectual genius.
