The Hidden Nature of Ketu

Ketu, like Rahu, is considered a shadowy, demonic planet, but its nature is much more concealed and secretive.

When Ketu is strong in a birth chart, life can be filled with complex, tangled situations, hidden agendas, and backstage manoeuvring.

People with a strong Ketu often become “power behind the throne” figures ambitious, cunning, and keen on influence.

In many ways, Ketu is the most devious of the planets because it works subtly, patiently, and grants the ability to conceal true feelings and intentions.

Ketu as Moksha-Karaka

Ketu is also known as moksha-karaka, the indicator of liberation from the material world.

Alongside its shadowy material qualities, Ketu can bestow a deep capacity for meditation, self-reflection, and spiritual aspiration.

It drives the yearning for moksha — liberation from the cycle of birth and death — and for nirvana.

The stones traditionally associated with Rahu and Ketu are tiger’s eye and hawk’s eye.

Signs of the Zodiac and Their Rulers

In addition to the nine planets (grahas), Jyotish (Vedic astrology) works with twelve zodiac signs (called rashi in Sanskrit).

An ancient Vedic legend tells that once Surya (the Sun) and Chandra (the Moon) argued over which of them ruled the zodiac.

To resolve the dispute, they agreed to divide the zodiac in half.

An imaginary dividing axis runs between Cancer and Leo, Capricorn and Aquarius — giving the Sun and Moon one sign each while the other planets govern two signs each, evenly spread on either side of this axis.

These two hemispheres in Jyotish are called Dakshinayana and Uttarayana — the southern and northern paths of the Sun, or “the day and night of the gods”.

Planetary Lordship of the Signs

So, the rulership of the signs is distributed as follows:

The two signs closest to the luminaries (the Sun and Moon) belong to Budha (Mercury), the planet nearest the Sun: Virgo (Kanya) and Gemini (Mithuna).

is known as the prince in the planetary hierarchy. Next come the signs ruled by Shukra (Venus): Libra (Tula) and Taurus (Vrishabha). Shukra was appointed as the royal minister.

The following signs — Scorpio (Vrishchika) and Aries (Mesha) — were assigned to Mangala (Mars), the commander-in-chief of the celestial army.
