The Sun in Astrology

In Jyotish (Vedic astrology), the Sun is considered a fiery, masculine planet.

The Sun is known as atma-karaka, the indicator of the ego, individuality, and personal qualities — even a person’s physical appearance (because the outer self reflects the subtle, inner essence).

The Sun represents the sthula-sharira — the physical body.

The strength of the Sun in a birth chart reveals the strength of a person’s character, vitality, health and life force.

The Sun and Ancestry

The Sun is also called Surya-pitri-karaka, the indicator of karma connected to the father and ancestors.

Its position in a horoscope reveals the support one receives from their ancestral line and gives insight into one’s family heritage.

Ancient texts state that a strong Sun brings blessings from the Divine, good fortune through government or authority, and support from the father.

Vital Energy and Independence

The Sun governs breath and prana (life energy).

It symbolises independence, the ability to make decisions, and the capacity to take responsibility.

A strong Sun in a horoscope suggests self-awareness and the ability to find support within oneself and through a connection to the Divine.

The Traits of a Strong Sun

People with a powerful Sun tend to have:

A robust constitution Strong body and good health An attractive appearance, with a large, round face Medium height, dark hair, and darker skin tone.

A strong Sun also grants:

Clear life principles; Self-confidence and prosperity; High social status and popularity;

Leadership qualities and the ability to inspire others.

It brings respect from others, dignity, pride, generosity, nobility, sincerity, ambition, and talent.

When the Sun is Weak or Afflicted

If the Sun is weak or afflicted by negative planetary influences (like Saturn, Mars, Rahu, or Ketu), the person may exhibit negative traits:

Egoism and arrogance; Excessive pride and extravagance; A desire to dominate or control others; Dreams of power, but no genuine support from their family line.

Such a person may feel isolated or humiliated by relatives.

Special Note from Parashara Muni

Parashara Muni — one of the founders of Jyotish and one of the seven Mahārishis, the wise cosmic sages — teaches that when the Sun is in the 10th degree of Libra, it destroys the beneficial results of raja yoga (a royal planetary combination for success and prosperity).
