THE TWELVE HOUSES OF THE HOROSCOPE

In astrology, the twelve houses — known in Sanskrit as bhavas or sthanas — represent distinct spheres of life. Each house has its own “stage,” complete with actors, props, and scripts, signifying areas where the karmic play of one’s life unfolds.

1st House – Tanu Bhava (House of the Self)

This house governs the physical body, appearance, constitution, vitality, temperament, natural tendencies, dignity, personal habits, and overall well-being. It represents one’s early life and the direction of the entire lifetime.

Medical association: Head, brain, eyesight.

2nd House – Dhana Bhava (House of Wealth)

Represents accumulated wealth, financial affairs, earnings, family lineage, speech, memory, imagination, dietary habits, and early childhood environment. Also linked with moral values and family responsibilities.

Medical association: Throat, neck, tongue, nose, teeth, right eye.

3rd House – Bhratri Bhava (House of Siblings & Effort)

Covers younger siblings, courage, initiative, enterprise, short journeys, communication, sports, contracts, writing, intellect, and competitive spirit. Reflects how one expresses effort and interacts with peers and neighbours.

Medical association: Shoulders, arms, ears (right ear in particular).

4th House – Matri Bhava (House of Mother & Home)

Denotes mother, home, property, vehicles, emotional comfort, domestic happiness, farmland, real estate, ancestral possessions, and the general state of mental peace.

Medical association: Chest, lungs, heart, and the breasts.

5th House – Putra Bhava (House of Children & Intelligence)

Relates to children, creativity, romance, education, wisdom, investment, spiritual practices (especially mantras), moral values, entertainment, and past-life merits (purva punya).

Medical association: Stomach and intestines.

6th House – Shatru Bhava (House of Enemies & Service)

Represents enemies, diseases, debts, competition, litigation, disappointments, fears, subordinates, maternal uncle, and service. It governs challenges that demand discipline, humility, and resilience.

Medical association: Digestive tract, intestines.

7th House – Kalatra Bhava (House of Partnership & Marriage)

Concerns marriage, sexual relationships, business partnerships, public interactions, and dealings with foreign countries. Also reflects one’s ability to maintain harmony in unions.

Medical association: Kidneys, bladder, reproductive organs.

8th House – Ayur Bhava (House of Longevity & Transformation)

Governs longevity, death, inheritances, mysteries, hidden talents, esoteric knowledge, sexual vulnerability, accidents, scandals, chronic illness, and spiritual evolution. A deeply karmic and transformative domain.

Medical association: Reproductive system, anus, excretory functions.

9th House – Dharma Bhava (House of Fortune & Higher Wisdom)

Symbolizes divine blessings, spiritual inclinations, ethics, higher education, foreign travels, faith, philosophy, religious teachers, father, and morality. It reflects the flow of fortune and good karma from past lives.

Medical association: Hips and thighs.

10th House – Karma Bhava (House of Career & Duty)

Associated with career, profession, public status, authority, fame, ambition, and societal contribution. Indicates one’s reputation and capacity to lead, act responsibly, and impact the world.

Medical association: Knees, joints, spine.

11th House – Labha Bhava (House of Gains & Aspirations)

Denotes income, fulfillment of desires, friendships, elder siblings, networking, recovery from illness, professional success, social circles, and general prosperity.

Medical association: Calves, ankles, left ear.

12th House – Vyaya Bhava (House of Losses & Liberation)

Reflects losses, expenses, foreign travels, isolation, detachment, confinement (hospitals, prisons), charity, moksha (spiritual liberation), hidden pleasures, secret enemies, and spiritual retreat. It is also the house of transcendence.
