If a planet does not reside in one of the special positions outlined in the planetary dignity table (such as exaltation, debilitation, or its own sign), its strength can still be interpreted based on several other key factors:
Its participation in yogas (planetary combinations –
The aspects it receives from other planets Its placement in specific houses of the chart
Remember, the aspects of benefic planets — Jupiter, Venus, a waxing Moon, and Mercury (when unafflicted) — tend to fortify and uplift the planet they influence.
On the other hand, aspects from malefic planets — Saturn, Mars, Rahu, and Ketu — usually afflict the planet, diminishing its strength and positive expression.
A planet placed in nīcha (a sign of debilitation) is traditionally considered weak. However, under certain conditions, it can receive what is known as Nīchabhanga — a “cancellation of debilitation” or, more accurately, a compensation for its weakness.
⚠️ Important: This doesn’t mean the planet becomes inherently strong — rather, its weakness can be worked through, refined, and eventually transformed into a source of wisdom, resilience, or mastery over time.
The debilitated planet is positioned in a kendrā (angular house: 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th) from the Lagna (Ascendant) or from the Moon. The lord of the sign in which the planet is debilitated is also in a kendrā from the Lagna or the Moon. The planet that is exalted in the sign of the debilitated planet is in a kendrā from the Lagna or the Moon. The debilitated planet is exalted in the Navāmśa (divisional chart D9).
In Albert Einstein’s birth chart, the planet Mercury is debilitated — but he receives a triple Nīchabhanga, making it ultimately potent and refined through challenge:
Mercury is placed in the 10th house, a kendrā from the Lagna.
Jupiter, the lord of Pisces (the sign of Mercury’s debilitation), is in a kendrā from the Moon.
Venus, which is exalted in Pisces, is also in a kendrā from the Lagna.
Thus, despite the apparent weakness, Mercury becomes a wellspring of genius, expressed through thought, communication, and scientific brilliance — not because it was inherently powerful, but because it was honed through inner work and karmic refinement.
