Yoga in Vedic Astrology

In Sanskrit, the word yoga means “connection.” In a spiritual sense, yoga refers to the union of the soul with the Divine. In astrology, the term yoga signifies a connection or relationship between planets. This connection can be a conjunction or a combined influence exerted by the planets.

The analysis of yogas is a vital part of interpreting a horoscope. The ability to identify planetary combinations—sometimes even contradictory ones—and draw accurate conclusions develops with experience. Furthermore, it is important to assess how strong a particular yoga is and how it is likely to manifest in the chart.

For instance, two horoscopes may both feature a conjunction of Jupiter and the Moon, forming Gaja-Kesari Yoga. In one chart, the yoga occurs in the 1st house in Cancer (the Moon’s own sign and Jupiter’s sign of exaltation), while in another it appears in the 8th house in Capricorn. Clearly, the strength and effect of the yoga will differ in each case. Therefore, evaluating the strength of a yoga is essential.

A yoga is considered strong if:

The planets involved are strong in sthāna-bala (i.e., by sign placement);

The planets involved govern favourable houses.

Vedic astrology contains a vast number of yogas. Let us now consider some of the most significant ones.

Rāja Yoga, or “royal planetary combination,” is one of the most powerful yogas in a horoscope. It signifies strength in the house where it occurs and indicates potential for high status, influence, and success.
