Understanding planetary strength is the cornerstone of accurate chart interpretation in Jyotish. It is not merely a technical step — it is the essence of predictive astrology. Knowing how powerful or debilitated a planet is within a particular sign enables us to gauge its influence, both constructive and disruptive, in a birth chart.
Each planet has:
Its own sign (Svakṣetra) — where it feels at home and functions with confidence. A sign of exaltation (Uccha) — where its power is at its zenith, pure and magnified. A sign of debilitation (Nīcha) — where its energy is impaired or misdirected. A Mūlatrikona sign — a special domain of strength, considered more potent than its own sign, yet not as elevated as exaltation.
There is also a concept of “planetary dignity”, where the degrees of exaltation or debilitation matter. For example, the 10th degree of Aries is the exaltation point for the Sun — the peak of its radiance and authority.
🌟 Relative Strength in Order:
In descending order of strength, planetary positions are generally evaluated as:
Exalted (Uccha) — The planet expresses its finest qualities with brilliance.
Mūlatrikona — Strong, purposeful, and mission-oriented.
Own Sign (Svakṣetra) — Stable, consistent, and empowered.
Friendly Sign — Supportive, but not sovereign.
Neutral Sign — Functionally adequate, but without distinction.
Enemy Sign — Restricted or challenged in its expression.
Debilitated (Nīcha) — Weakened, unstable, and often karmically tested.
