Rahu and Ketu, known as aprakasha grahas or “shadow planets,” do not emit light and therefore act in subtle, often karmic ways. Unlike the visible grahas, classical texts offer few direct descriptions of their effects in specific zodiac signs. Their influence is chameleon-like, often absorbing and reflecting the nature of the sign lord (ruler) in which they are placed.
For this reason, to truly interpret Rahu or Ketu, one must examine the strength and condition of the ruling planet of the sign they occupy. If the sign lord is strong and well-placed, the shadow planet can express with power and potential. If the lord is weak or afflicted, the results of Rahu and Ketu may be limited or distorted.
In the tradition of Jyotish (Vedic astrology), it is said:
Rahu behaves similarly to Saturn — slow-moving, karmic, capable of both delays and breakthroughs. Ketu acts like Mars — sharp, intense, and spiritualising through separation or detachment.
The sage Parashara Muni, one of the foundational teachers of Jyotish, describes:
Rahu as exalted in Taurus Ketu as exalted in Scorpio
In these signs, their mystical qualities are elevated — potentially bringing fame, wealth, or spiritual gifts, especially if well-supported.
Some astrologers also consider:
Rahu strong in Virgo Ketu strong in Pisces
These signs allow the shadow planets to channel their qualities more cleanly: Rahu becoming precise, strategic, and analytical in Virgo; Ketu becoming meditative, intuitive, and transcendent in Pisces.
According to certain schools, Rahu gains additional power when placed in its own sign, Aquarius, and Ketu when in Leo — though this view is not universally accepted, it’s valued in many lineages for chart interpretation.
Because Rahu and Ketu have no physical bodies, they act through the planets they associate with — and most importantly, the lords of the signs they occupy. Their impact should always be read contextually, with attention to:
The dignity and strength of the sign ruler Conjunctions and aspects from other grahas The house placement and broader chart karma
🌟 Planetary Nature Overview
In Jyotish, the planets are divided into benefic (saumya) and malefic (krura) by nature:
☀️ Benefic Planets:
Jupiter
Venus
Waxing Moon (Shukla Paksha)
Mercury (when unafflicted or joined with benefics)
🌑 Malefic Planets:
Saturn
Mars
Sun
Waning Moon (Krishna Paksha)
Mercury, if joined with malefic planets
Rahu and Ketu, though not always included in this list, are generally considered malefic by effect — though they can produce extraordinary outcomes, both materially and spiritually, depending on the karmic context.
