🔭 How to Calculate Mahadasha: The Planetary Periods of a Life

Let’s continue our journey into the Vimshottari Dasha system—the heart of timing in Vedic astrology.

📉 Calculating the Remainder of the Nakshatra

To calculate how much time is left in the Sun’s Mahadasha (the first period in Gumilev’s life), we need to know how far the Moon has travelled through its nakshatra at the moment of birth.

Each nakshatra = 13°20′ = 800 arc minutes Gumilev’s Moon is at 26°46′ Leo That’s 794 minutes into Uttara Phalguni

This means there are only 6 minutes left before the Moon exits the nakshatra—he’s almost at the end!

Now apply a simple proportion to find out how many days of the Sun’s Mahadasha remain:

794 / 800 = X / 2160

Solving for X gives us 2,143.8 days, or:

🗓 5 years, 11 months, and 14 days

🪐 Sequence of Mahadashas in Gumilev’s Life

Using his birth Moon nakshatra (Uttara Phalguni, ruled by the Sun), here are the major planetary periods (Mahadashas) in his life:

Each major period contains nine smaller sub-periods called Antardashas (or Bhuktis). These begin with the same planet as the Mahadasha.

🌀 Antardasha: Sub-Periods Within the Dasha

Let’s take Gumilev’s Sun Mahadasha as an example:

Starts: 29 March 1886 The Sun-Sun Antardasha lasts 3 months and 18 days Then comes: Sun-Moon = 6 months Sun-Mars = 4 months and 6 days …and so on.

Each planet’s Antardasha duration is derived from a predefined table based on the Vimshottari system.
