1. What Sarvashtakavarga Reveals
The Sarvashtakavarga chart shows the strength of each house, which allows astrologers to make far more accurate predictions when interpreting a birth chart. In contrast, the Bhinna Ashtakavarga charts help determine whether a particular planet and its transits are beneficial or harmful.
Let’s take a real-life example. In the chart of Nikolai Gumilev, we find that the 5th house, which represents children, is weak—containing just 22 bindu in the Sarvashtakavarga. However, the lord of the 5th house is Jupiter, and in Jupiter’s Bhinna Ashtakavarga, the 5th house is strong, showing 5 bindu. This confirms that children are indeed indicated in his destiny.
At the time of his son’s birth, Jupiter was transiting Scorpio, which, in Jupiter’s own Bhinna Ashtakavarga, contains 7 bindu—a very high number. When his daughter was born, Jupiter was transiting Gemini, which holds 6 bindu—also a strong placement. These are the two highest-scoring signs in Jupiter’s individual chart.
2. What Is a Strong House?
A house is considered strong if it holds more than 28 bindu in the Sarvashtakavarga. This number is calculated by dividing the total of 337 bindu evenly across the 12 signs of the zodiac.
In Gumilev’s horoscope, the 5th house is the weakest, with 22 bindu, followed by the 7th and 12th houses, each with 24 bindu. The 2nd and 9th houses are also slightly below average with 27 bindu each.
This weakness had already been identified during our earlier analysis of Gumilev’s horoscope. On the other hand, the strongest houses in his chart are the 3rd, 8th, and 9th houses. Their strength was also confirmed in our previous breakdown of his planetary placements and life events.
3. The Horoscope as a Living Tapestry
This serves as a final confirmation: a well-constructed horoscope reveals a clear, logical, and self-validating picture of one’s life. All parts interweave and support one another when read correctly.

4. Comparing the Houses of Dharma and Karma
Scriptures on Jyotish (Vedic astrology) recommend comparing two groups of houses: Group One: 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 10th Group Two: 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, and 12th If the first group has more bindu, the person is likely to be virtuous, lucky, and successful in life. But if the second group outweighs the first, the individual may be deceitful or inclined toward negative actions. Interestingly, in Kali Yuga (our current age), a stronger second group may actually help someone “survive” or even “succeed” at the expense of others—though not in a spiritually uplifting way.
5. Strength of the Ascendant and House 12
The Ascendant (1st house) should have more bindu than the 12th house, and the 12th house should have fewer bindu than the 11th house. When this happens, it signifies a person who enjoys life, earns more than they spend, and generally moves through life with greater ease. The greater the difference between the 11th and 12th houses, the easier their financial flow will be.
6. The Progression of Fortune
The ideal pattern is for the number of bindu to increase progressively from the: 9th house (luck, higher purpose), to the 10th house (career, action), and finally to the 11th house (gains, fulfilment). This steady increase shows a person who is building their destiny wisely—through effort and alignment with dharma.
7. Weakness in Key Houses
If the 1st, 9th, 10th, and 11th houses all contain fewer than 28 bindu, the person will likely struggle with misfortune, and may find it hard to progress smoothly in life.
8. Wealth vs Spending
If the 2nd house (wealth) has more bindu than the 12th (loss, expenditure), the person will spend less than they earn. If the 12th house has more bindu, they may become financially strained, or struggle to accumulate savings.
9. Elements and Direction
One can also group bindu by element and direction: Fire signs (East) – Aries, Leo, Sagittarius Earth signs (South) – Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn Air signs (West) – Gemini, Libra, Aquarius Water signs (North) – Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces Comparing totals across these directions may reveal where a person’s energy is most concentrated—whether they are more active, grounded, communicative, or emotionally sensitive in life.
