Drekkana (D3): The Chart of Siblings and Courage

What is Drekkana?

Drekkana, also known as Dreshkana or simply the D3 chart, is the divisional chart that divides each zodiac sign into three equal parts of 10 degrees. Each third is called a Drekkana, meaning “third part” in Sanskrit.

This chart reveals insights into:

Your siblings — especially brothers and sisters Your personal courage, vitality, and initiative The quality of your efforts and the karma you share with siblings

✦ How is Drekkana Calculated?

The construction of the Drekkana chart, like other vargas (divisional charts), begins with:

Determining the Lagna (Ascendant) in the Rashi chart. Using a standard Drekkana table to assign each 10-degree section of a sign to a specific sign in the Drekkana chart.

The rule of 10° segments:

First 10 degrees of any sign → ruled by the same sign Second 10 degrees → ruled by the 5th sign from it Last 10 degrees → ruled by the 9th sign from it

📌 Example:

If your Lagna is in Taurus at 17°, it falls in the second Drekkana.

Taurus is the base sign → the second Drekkana is ruled by Virgo (5th from Taurus).

So, your Drekkana Lagna would be in Virgo.

This rule is repeated for every planet, not just the Ascendant.

✦ Interpreting the Drekkana

Once you’ve placed the Lagna and all the planets in their respective Drekkana signs, this chart can be interpreted just like a normal Rashi chart — but its focus is narrowed:

It shows your relationship with siblings Indicates cooperation or rivalry with brothers/sisters Describes shared karma, family dynamics, and inheritance matters It also reflects inner willpower, courage, and your ability to take bold actions

✦ Why D3 Matters in Your Chart

Strained or malefic placements in Drekkana may point to conflict or separation from siblings. Well-placed benefics in D3 (like Jupiter or Venus) suggest supportive and loving sibling relationships. It also plays a role in assessing success in sports, competitions, and entrepreneurship, as these depend on drive and personal effort.

The Drekkana chart offers a window into your early environment, your siblings, and the karmic narrative of shared lineage. It’s especially helpful for understanding your internal fire — how and when you rise up to challenges, and whether you’re likely to walk your path alone or with family support.
