Birth Under Bharani: A Star of Strength and Tragedy
Anna Andreyevna was born in the port city of Odessa, the daughter of a naval engineer. Her birth took place under the nakshatra Bharani, governed by Venus. Women born under this star often possess magnetic allure, physical beauty, a life filled with trials and sorrow, and a resolute, even masculine character. These are women marked by destiny.
2. Childhood Moves and Parental Separation
One year after Anna’s birth, her family moved to Tsarskoye Selo. She became a student at the Mariinskaya Gymnasium but spent each summer near Sevastopol. In 1905, after her parents’ divorce (indicated astrologically by Saturn in the 9th house, and the Sun and Moon situated in difficult houses or dushthanas), Anna moved with her mother to Yevpatoria. Between 1906 and 1910, she lived in Kyiv, attending gymnasium and later enrolling in a law programme for women.
3. Fateful Union with Gumilev
Anna Gorensko met Nikolai Gumilev in 1903. On 25 April 1910, they were married “beyond the Dnieper, in a village church.” This occurred during the planetary period of Moon–Rahu–Saturn. The Moon, ruler of the Navamsha 1st house, is conjoined with Venus (ruler of the 7th house) in the natal chart. Rahu is with the ascendant lord, and Saturn governs the Navamsha 7th house—clear celestial markers of union.
4. Literary Debut
In 1907, Gumilev published Anna’s poem “On his hand, many sparkling rings…” in the Paris-based magazine Sirius. This marked the successful debut of the future great poet. It was the Sun–Venus period: the Sun, ruler of the 10th house of fame, and Venus, ruler of the 7th (recognition abroad), also influencing the 12th house (foreign lands).
5. Travels Across Europe
Between 1910 and 1912, Anna travelled with Gumilev to Paris and Italy. These were the periods of Moon–Rahu and Moon–Jupiter. The Moon, conjoined with Venus (ruler of the 7th and 12th houses), aspects the 12th house. In the Navamsha, the Moon is in the 3rd house of travel and aspected by Rahu (symbol of the foreign). In the Chaturthamsha, the Moon, ruler of the 9th house (long journeys), lies in the 12th (foreign lands). Jupiter, ruling the 12th from Chandra Lagna, resides in the 9th.
6. Birth of Lev
On 1 October 1912, Anna and Nikolai’s son, Lev, was born. This took place during the Moon–Saturn period. Jupiter is the key significator: ruler of the 5th house of children in the natal and Chaturthamsha charts, exalted in the Navamsha, and situated in the 5th house in the Chaturthamsha. The conception occurred in Jupiter’s sub-period; birth came in Saturn’s. Saturn, in Cancer (Moon’s sign), is in the 9th house. In the Saptamsha, Saturn is a yoga-karaka, joined with Mercury, ruler of the 5th house, and aspects the Moon.
7. First Poetry Collection: “Evening”
In March 1912, Anna released her first book, Evening, during the Moon–Jupiter period. Jupiter is strong across all Vargas: exalted in Navamsha, and in its own sign in both Chaturthamsha and Dashamsha. The Moon, ruling the 9th house (fortune) in the natal chart, and the 1st in the Navamsha, brought blessings. The book was released under the Guild of Poets, led by her husband. Jupiter, ruler of the 2nd house (poetry), aspects the Sun, ruler of the 10th, in multiple charts.
8. Breakthrough with “Rosary”
True fame arrived in spring 1914 with the release of Rosary. This was the Moon–Mercury period. Mercury is conjoined with the Sun (10th lord) and Mars (Ascendant lord), forming Raja Yoga and receiving Jupiter’s blessing. In Dashamsha, Mercury is the 3rd house ruler (literature), residing in the Ascendant, again under Jupiter’s aspect.
9. Her View on Fame
Anna was not ambitious; fame never thrilled her. The 10th house was not dominant, its ruler placed in a dushthana. She was sensitive to criticism and emotionally delicate. Fame, to her, was more nuisance than joy:
“I am free. Everything is my play.
At night the Muse soothes me like balm,
But come morning, Fame appears—
A rattle shaking near my ear.”
10. Divorce from Gumilev
In August 1918, Anna divorced Gumilev during a Mars–Mars period. Mars rules the 6th house (divorce) in the natal and Chaturthamsha charts, and is located in the 6th of Navamsha, conjoined Saturn (ruler of the 7th). In Chandra Lagna, Mars aspects the 6th. In Chaturthamsha, it is again Lagnesha, conjoined with Mercury (6th lord) and aspects the 6th.
11. Second Marriage and Short Union
In autumn 1918, Anna married Vladimir Shileiko. The union didn’t last—by summer 1921 they were separated. They married during a Mars–Mars period (Mars being Lagnesha), and separated in Mars–Saturn. Saturn lies in the 6th house (separation) in Aries, and is aspected by Mars.
12. A Triple Blow
Spring 1921 brought devastating loss: her friend Blok, ex-husband Gumilev, and brother Andrey all passed. This was Mars–Saturn. Saturn, ruler of the 3rd house (siblings), aspects the 3rd in both Rashi and Chaturthamsha. Mars, as ruler of the 1st, is also ruler of the 7th from the 7th (house of a spouse’s death), while Saturn rules the Navamsha 7th.
13. A New Companion: Nikolai Punin
In autumn 1922, Anna became the civil wife of art historian Nikolai Punin. This occurred during Mars–Mercury. Mercury is conjoined with Lagnesha Mars in Rashi, and with Venus (kalatra-karaka, significator of spouse) in Navamsha.
14. Years of Silence
From 1923 to 1940, Anna’s work was no longer reprinted. New poetry was silenced. This began in the Mars–Venus period. Venus is a maraka (death-bringer) in the main chart, Chandra Lagna, and Chaturthamsha. In Rashi and Dashamsha, it is placed in the house of enemies and is afflicted by Rahu.
15. A Small Resurgence
In 1940, a modest collection titled From Six Books was published during Rahu–Sun. The Sun, ruler of the 10th house in both Rashi and Chaturthamsha, was involved in Raja Yogas.
16. Tragedy Returns
In 1938, her son Lev Gumilev was arrested and sentenced to five years in a labour camp. Around the same time, Anna separated from Nikolai Lunin. This occurred in Rahu–Venus. Venus ruled the 7th and 12th in Rashi, and in Saptamsha, the 1st and 6th (a maraka for children), and is debilitated.
17. Wartime in Tashkent
Anna spent the war years in evacuation in Tashkent. In 1941, she left for Central Asia for health reasons. This was Rahu–Moon. The Moon ruled the 9th house of travel in Rashi and Chaturthamsha, and lay in the 12th (foreign lands) in Chaturthamsha, and 3rd (travel) in Navamsha.
18. Expulsion from the Writers’ Union
In autumn 1946, Anna was expelled from the Writers’ Union despite rising fame. Her work was deemed ideologically inappropriate. This was Jupiter–Saturn–Venus. Venus, as we’ve seen, is a maraka and troublesome for her. Jupiter rules the 2nd house (speech and art). In Trimsamsha (chart of misfortune), Saturn, ruler of the 10th, lies in the 7th (public), afflicts the 1st (self), and the 4th (homeland). The 10th is under siege from Mars, Sun, Rahu, and Ketu. Jupiter and Venus both lie in dushthanas and are their rulers—confirming a period of severe trials.
19. Another Arrest for Lev
In November 1949, her son Lev was again arrested and sentenced to ten years. This occurred during Jupiter–Mercury. Jupiter ruled the 5th in Rashi and Chaturthamsha; Mercury ruled the 5th in Saptamsha and Trimsamsha, and lay in the 12th (prison) in the latter.
20. Rehabilitation and Recognition
In January 1951, at the request of Alexander Fadeyev, Anna was reinstated in the Writers’ Union. This happened during Jupiter–Ketu–Jupiter. Jupiter was placed in the 9th in Dashamsha and 2nd in Rashi. Ketu, in Sagittarius, mimicked Jupiter’s beneficence.
21. Jupiter: Both Curse and Catalyst
Why did Jupiter bring both glory and oblivion? Jupiter was retrograde—karma’s creditor. As 5th lord, he lay in his own 2nd house and influenced the 6th, 8th, and 10th houses, touching nearly every planet except Saturn. He was the “dynamic core” of the horoscope—signifying karmic reckoning. Viparita Raja Yoga in Trimsamsha and strength in Dashamsha confirmed her destiny: to rise from the ashes.
22. Nobel Nomination and International Acclaim
In 1962, Anna was nominated for the Nobel Prize. This was during Saturn–Mercury. Saturn ruled the 10th from Chandra Lagna and lay in the 9th in Rashi. Mercury ruled the 3rd in Dashamsha and Chandra Lagna, and was placed in Dashamsha’s Ascendant. In Rashi, it was involved in strong Raja Yogas, and ruled the 11th house of honours, residing in its own 8th and forming Viparita Raja Yoga.
23. Final Laurels
In 1964, still under Saturn–Mercury, Anna received the international Etna-Taormina Prize in Italy. In December, Oxford University awarded her an honorary doctorate in literature.
24. Death and Legacy
Anna Akhmatova passed away on 5 March 1966 in a sanatorium near Domodedovo. This occurred during Saturn–Ketu. Ketu acted as a maraka, placed in the 2nd house alongside Saturn, the maraka of the Navamsha, which lay in its 8th house.
August isn’t just another month — it’s the reveal. Since spring, we’ve been…
Mars — the ancient god of war to the Romans, known as Ares to the Greeks…
