Vargas — The Divisional Charts of Jyotish. Why your horoscope has not one, but sixteen layers of meaning

A Multilayered Map of Karma

A horoscope in Jyotish is not a flat, one-dimensional picture. Far from it! In fact, it doesn’t just have one hidden layer — it has sixteen.

From the main birth chart (Rashi), Vedic astrologers calculate 16 additional divisional charts, known as Vargas — or divisional charts. Each Varga illuminates a specific area of a person’s karma: wealth, relationships, children, career, education, and so on.

✧ Why Exact Birth Time Is Everything

Knowing your exact birth time is crucial. That’s because the Lagna (Ascendant) — the sign that was rising at the moment of birth — determines the accuracy of the Vargas.

But here’s the intriguing part: this relationship also works in reverse. If an event has already taken place in your life, it must be reflected not just in the birth chart, but also in the corresponding divisional chart. This allows astrologers to refine the birth time through cross-verification.

✧ What Exactly Counts as the Moment of Birth?

In ancient India, astrologers cast several charts for one person’s birth —

One for when the baby’s head appeared,
Another for the moment the baby fully emerged from the womb,
One for when the umbilical cord was cut,
And another for the first cry.

Sometimes, they even analysed the chart of conception! Such was the precision and reverence for time in the golden ages.

✧ What Do We Use Today?

In the current age — Kali Yuga — we are sadly less precise when it comes to timekeeping.

That’s why modern sages recommend casting just one birth chart:
the one calculated for the moment the umbilical cord is cut, when the child is fully separated from the mother. This moment is considered the true time of birth in Jyotish.

From that one foundational chart, all divisional charts (Vargas) can be calculated to reveal the deeper fabric of a person’s destiny.

✧ The Sixteen Vargas, According to Sage Parashara

In his legendary work Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Chapter 6, Sutras 2–4), the great sage Parashara Muni states:

“Lord Brahma described 16 kinds of divisions (Varga) for each zodiac sign. These are:

Rashi, Hora, Drekkana (Dreshkana), Chaturthamsha, Saptamsha, Navamsha, Dashamsha, Dwadashamsha, Shodashamsha, Vimshamsha, Chaturvimshamsha, Saptavimshamsha, Trimshamsha, Khavedamsha, Akshavedamsha, and Shashtyamsha.”

✧ Which Vargas Are Used Today?

Modern Vedic astrologers in India typically don’t use all 16 Vargas for predictions.

Instead, they focus on the divisional charts that reflect the most important areas of life, such as:

Rashi – The main birth chart Hora – Wealth and prosperity Drekkana – Siblings, courage, expression Chaturthamsha – Home, assets, land Saptamsha – Children Navamsha – Marriage, life path Dashamsha – Career and reputation Dwadashamsha – Parents and ancestry Sometimes Vimshamsha – Spiritual progress and higher learning

Each of these Vargas is always analysed in conjunction with the Rashi chart, never on its own. Together, they offer a stunningly detailed portrait of a soul’s journey through life.
