First, let’s figure out what a witch’s altar is. It is important to understand that not all practicing witches create an altar. Some, especially kitchen witches, keep their potions in the kitchen and perform the ritual there or under the open sky. Others prefer to store their crystals, herbs, essential oils, and other paraphernalia in a secluded corner of their home, thereby they create an altar where they perform most of their rituals.
Some have both kitchen altar and an altar in a secluded area of a house where they meditate.
An altar could be a small table, cupboard or corner with shelves on which witches store magical paraphernalia and images of the gods and goddesses they worship.
First of all, you need to determine the place and direction to which your altar will face. It is important to know that each direction represents a separate element:
North – Water – Mercury
South – Fire – Mars
East – Air – Sun
West – Earth – Saturn
Wiccan witches set up an altar facing north, as Wicca is an earthly religion based on reverence for nature. However, you can choose any direction that is close to you in spirit. You can also choose a direction based on the elements of your zodiac sign.
I would prefer the north east, south east north, south west, and east directions for the altar.
As soon as you decide on a place, feel free to proceed with the choice of paraphernalia. What and how to lay out on the altar depends entirely on your preferences. Candles, talismans, crystals, herbs, and anything related to your practice can beautify your sacred space.
